1939 – Springfield ended a 37 day streak of dry no precipitation more than a trace. The month of September had 0.14″ of water total which stood as the driest September on record until 1979.1942 – Unseasonably cold weather brought September record low temperatures to Champaign at 29 degrees and Peoria at 24.
1972 – Lake County had a strong tornado move across North Chicago and into Lake Michigan. There was $1 million in damage, most of which was at the Great Lakes Navel Training Center where many barracks were destroyed.
