Kathy Sweedler from the U of I extension office joins the Morning Show with tips for filing taxes as the deadline approaches.
It’s that time of year when we’re gathering tax-related documents to do our tax preparation and filing. If you have a relatively simple tax situation, then you may be able to save yourself some money and prepare your own tax forms.
United Way has collaborated with H&R Block to provide access to tax software online that allows you to file both federal and state taxes for free. MyFreeTaxes.com is completely free for households who earned less than $66,000 in 2017. If you have questions, IRS-certified specialists are ready to answer questions in real-time.
In addition, two organizations in our Champaign-Urbana are providing free tax preparation assistance:
An AARP supported program through Family Service provides free tax aide for seniors and low-income individuals at Faith United Methodist Church in Champaign. Please call 217-359-6500 for an appointment.
Salt and Light Ministry has a Volunteer Income Tax Assistance site with help for those people who are income eligible. Call 217-355-5654 for more information.
For people in other communities, go to IRS’s website to find free tax preparation help. Go to https://www.irs.gov/individuals/free-tax-return-preparation-for-you-by-volunteers and put in zip code for the site nearest you.
If you’re receiving a tax refund this year, think about setting aside some of it in savings. This is America Saves Week and I encourage everyone to set a savings goal at http://champaigncountysaves.org/. Happy America Saves Week!
