Urbana recognition: Under the Canopy A Guide to Selecting, Planting and Caring For Trees In Illinois

The Morning Show

· Tree Planting Season starts in April

· In April the City of Urbana, IDNR and USDA Forest Service will be releasing a newly revised 3rd Edition of “Under the Canopy A Guide to Selecting, Planting and Caring For Trees In Illinois”

· City of Urbana was recently recognized for its 43rd year as a Tree City USA community and awarded its 27th consecutive Tree City USA Growth Award.

Please share four talking points or subjects you would like included in the interview. (NOTE: These should be “big picture” points that give context to the interview).

1: Guide was created to answer the most commonly asked questions about incorporating and caring for trees around one’s property. The publication also provides a short list of lesser known trees to help promote urban forest diversification

2: Where can residents get a copy of the Guide

3: The National Arbor Day Foundation recognized Urbana’s as a Tree City USA for 2018 and provided the City its 27th consecutive Tree City USA Growth Award.

4: URBANA TREE PLANTING INITIATIVE: Why is tree planting so important? Urbana lost over 700 trees from the Emerald Ash Borer epidemic. This coupled with extraordinary time spent on

removals rather than tree care and planting has resulted in urban forest decline. It is important for Urbana or any city for that matter to get its forest back to vigor and growth before the next wave of tree issues come our way.
