Road to Farm Progress: July 11th

The Morning Show

The Farm Progress show will be here before you know it. August 27th through the 29th at Decatur. And Stu Ellis has been looking at whether the corn fields around Progress City will be ready for the combine demonstrations.

Stu Ellis

We’re on the Road to Farm Progress and we’re only 47 days away from the opening of the show. One of the critical parts is having the demonstration fields ready to be harvested during the show that starts on August 27th. One of the host farmers, Marc Padrutt has been in the field. He’s been checking the maturity of this field, and of course this is short season corn.

Marc Padrutt

This is 86 day corn, Stu, and its pollinating right now and given the forecast and these temperatures we’re having its moving along quite nicely.

Stu Ellis

So you’re pleased with the development here when we’ve got just 47 more days before combines are going to hit…

Marc Padrutt

Given that it was planted May 17, we’re surprisingly good shape, so, I think we’ll be ready by showtime.

Stu Ellis

It just needs growing degree days…

Marc Padrutt

It needs heat. It needs sunlight, which we’re getting right now, so it we keep up with this weather, we should have harvestable corn that last week of August.

Stu Ellis

We wish Marc the best, and his corn the best as well, because that is one of the key parts of the show. That’s our report for today, and we’re On the Road to Farm Progress. I’m Stu Ellis with WCIA3 your local news leader
