You might be training for a marathon or just a 5k– but heart health is critical to achieving those goals. 

Dr. Karen Wiarda joins us from Carle Heart and Vascular Institute. 

·         People get out of shape very quickly when they stop exercising
·         One people start again they see little results very quickly
·         But, it takes a long time to get back to where before winter
·         Start slow
·         Set a comfortable pace
·         Exercise with a friend or take a cell phone on your walk/run
·         Be wary for symptoms that you’re overdoing it
·         It takes time to accomplish goals
·         Shortness of breath
·         Have to stop several times to catch breath
·         Chest or jaw pain
·         Back pain
·         Dizziness
·         Go over potential risk factors
·         Make sure your body is ready for exercise
·         Discuss fitness goals
·         Be aware of warning signs
·         Helps reduce risk for several chronic illness
·         Improves emotional and physical health
