Harvest Heritage: Derek Martin – National Outstanding Young Farmer

The Morning Show

There are many great young farmers across Central Illinois, but one at Mt. Pulaski has been singled out as a National Outstanding Young Farmer. Stu Ellis has our Harvest Heritage report on a young man who is setting an example in the way he farms and serves his community.

Derek Martin, who farms with his father and brother in parts of Logan, Macon, and Sangamon counties says he’s not sure who submitted his name for the honor…

Derek Martin

Well, that’s what we’re still trying to figure out. We’re not quite sure. Its sponsored by John Deere and the National Association of county Agricultural Agents.

Stu Ellis

There were many steps to the process that culminated about 10 days ago when Derek and his wife Renee became one of four couples receiving the honor for 2019.

Derek Martin

We learned a lot of great things that we were able to bring back to our farm going forward.

Stu Ellis

And Derek has already had a Utah farmer come to learn from him

Derek Martin

We came here and spent a little time in the afternoon looking though the microscope looking at different soils on the slides and identifying beneficial bacteria and fungi and showing them what a soil should have and shouldn’t have.

Stu Ellis

Much of the recognition was based on community service…

Derek Martin

Renee is on the Looking for Lincoln, Logan County Tourism, the Courthouse foundation. Helps coach, helps at the church, boy scouts, I help coaching with the kids as well. Secretary of the Logan County Farm bureau, president of the Mt. Pulaski park district, president of the drainage district.

And father Jeff Martin said when he learned his son had been named an National Outstanding Young Farmer, he popped some buttons from pride.

Jeff Martin

Yeah, sure did. You strive your whole life to set an example. And I guess that Jean and I have set an example for them and we hope for them to follow in our footsteps for the example that we have set and we are seeing that come to fruition.

That’s our harvest heritage report. I’m Stu Ellis with WCIA3 your local news leader.
