This is National FFA week and the more than 17 thousand FFA members in Illinois are celebrating with a wide variety of activities this week. Stu Ellis will be at the St. Joe tractor drive this morning and the Taylorville FFA lunch today. But he found out that agriculture education is one of the priorities of the new Illinois Director of Agriculture…
John Sullivan says agriculture education will one of the two main priorities for his department following a strategy session with many agriculture stakeholders in the state.
I mentioned that ag education was certainly at the table. Ways that we could, as a department ways that we could try to get more people, especially young people involved in agriculture, it’s a bright field, it’s a growing field, lots of opportunities and so the way that we can figure out ways that we can broaden the base of young people that are looking for fields to go into we think ag education is a tremendous field to look at.
Director Sullivan said a second priority for the Department of agriculture would be expansion of broadband internet into rural areas.
A theme that came up over and over again was the need for additional broadband services out in the rural areas. I told everybody and I repeated this many times, I can speak from a personal level here, both from my family’s auction business background and how our business has changed and how the need for high speed internet is critical as well as on our own home and farm. Just the slow access to internet and how that hampers our ability to work, and so those are a couple areas that we here at the department would like to focus on.
That’s our report from the Farm. I’m Stu Ellis with WCIA3 your local news leader
