The return of a big screen action hero and an off-beat biopic are on area screens this weekend. Film critics Chuck Koplinski and Pam Powell tell us about “John Wick 3” and Wild Nights with Emily in Friday Flicks.
John Wick: Chapter 3-Parabellum (Starts Friday) Super-assassin John Wick (Keanu Reeves) is on the run after killing a member of the international assassin’s guild, and with a $14 million price tag on his head – he is the target of hit men and women everywhere. A serviceable action flick that’s a step down from the other two entries in the series but manages to deliver enough thrills during its first hour to make it worthwhile. The tepid final act suggests it’s time for the titular hero to hang up his guns. 3 Stars (Chuck Koplinski) Rated R. 130 minutes. AMC-C, AMC-D, HAR, SAV.
Wild Nights with Emily (Starts Friday) This dramatization of the little-known side of the writer Emily Dickinson’s life, in particular, her relationship with another woman is an odd mixture of revisionist history as well as parodic lunacy. Writer/director Madeleine Olnek concocts a strange mixture of tones in this informative, brisk tale that’s saved by the perfectly cast Molly Shannon in the title role, as the actress uses her trademark quirkiness to great effect. 3 ½ Stars (Chuck Koplinski) Rated PG-13. 84 minutes.
