A live-action remake and a smart teen comedy are on screens this weekend. Film critics Chuck Koplinski and Pam Powell review “Aladdin” and “Booksmart” in Friday Flicks.
Booksmart (Starts Friday) On the eve of their high school graduation, two academic superstars and best friends (Kaitlyn Dever & Billie Lourd) realize they should have worked less and played more. Determined not to fall short of their peers, the girls try to cram four years of fun into one night. Though the film is flawed regarding certain points of logic, the exuberance of the two leads and its joyous message of girl power – note how the duo constantly pump each other up – makes for a refreshing take on a well-known premise. 3 Stars (Chuck Koplinski) Rated R. 102 minutes. AMC-C, AMC-D, SAV.
