WCIA — Illinois basketball has landed one of the biggest transfers remaining in the portal with former Baylor standout Matthew Mayer committing to play for the Illini on Friday night.

Mayer picked Illinois ahead of North Carolina, Memphis and Texas Tech, bringing a size, length and versatility to an Illini frontcourt that is looking for depth.

Mayer won a national title with the Bears in 2021, where he averaged 8.1 points and 3.7 rebounds per game, shooting 39 percent from beyond the arc. Last season, the 6-foot-9 wing put up a career high 9.8 points and 5.0 rebounds per game, helping lead Baylor to a top seed in the NCAA tournament before falling in the Round of 32 to eventual national runner-up North Carolina.
