WCIA — Mum’s the word surrounding Illinois basketball coach John Groce’s future with the program. The team flew back on Friday afternoon from the Big Ten tournament in Washington D.C. where they were eliminated after just one game. The decision to bring back Groce or not falls squarely on athletic director Josh Whitman’s shoulders. The now second year AD hasn’t publicly commented on the situation in more than a month. After losing to Michigan in our nation’s capitol, Groce talked about the future of the program.
“Certainly over the last month I’ve made the comment that I think it’s the most connected team we’ve had since I’ve been at Illinois,” Groce said. “So you add that to what we’ve got coming in and some guys that are young now and you add some more young guys and it’s exciting.”
Groce still has two years remaining on his contract, running through 2019. If fired this month, he’s owed a $1.6 million buyout.
