Roller coaster ride: Abrams/Illini enduring ups-and-downs

CHAMPAIGN — Illinois has seen its fair share of ups-and-downs this season.  The Illini have wins over North Carolina State, VCU and BYU.  They also have four double-digit losses (Florida St., West Virigina, Maryland, Indiana).

Needless to say, consistency has been an issue.  Not only for the Illini but graduate senior Tracy Abrams as well.  After scoring a career-high 31 points against Central Michigan on Dec. 10, Abrams has only scored 38 points in the following five games.  Fifth-year head coach John Groce says scoring isn’t everything.

“When you say slump you look at shooting and obviously you’d like for him to make every shot but he’s continued to be vocal, have us ready to practice like he did last week, quarterback our team and be that guy as well,” Groce said.  “That’s as important as shot making.  He provides that I’m confident that as long as he takes good ones eventually he’ll snap out of it with the shooting percentage.”
Abrams and the Illini return home for two games this week, taking on Michigan Wednesday night at 8 p.m. followed by their first return game of the season when Maryland comes to town Saturday at 5 p.m.
