TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WCIA) — Eastern Illinois quarterback Mitch Kimble hit Dennis Turner in the back of the end zone with three seconds left to score the game-winner, giving the Panthers a 22-20 win over Indiana State in the season opener for both teams Thursday night.
“It was a lot of fun,” Kimble said. “I couldn’t have asked for a better birthday present..”
“We actually had more time on the clock than what we’re used to practicing with,” EIU head coach Kim Dameron said. “So that helped and then obviously we came down and we used our timeouts right and all that. It was really good. Really proud of the way they kept staying in there and fighting.”
“(I) was pretty confident,” Kimble added. “Dennis (Turner) ran a good route. I just put it there, a good spot for him. I think our O-line throughout that two-minute drill did a great job protecting me. We’re just executing. We practice the two-minute drill all the time. So, we were definitely ready for that.”
“I wasn’t wanting it to be this way,” Dameron said. “I felt like, had the game, had we done something offensively in the second half, the game should have been over, but it wasn’t and we just had to keep fighting.”
