DANVILLE — The Danville Area Community College Softball team is making program history as the first team to make it to the national tournament.
The Jaguars secured the District P Championship Thursday evening, defeating Cottey College (Mo.) in a double header
When head coach Matt Cervantes took over three years ago, DACC won just one game. Now he’s the Region 24 Coach of the Year and his team is 34-6.
“It still hasn’t really hit us yet, you know?” sophomore pitcher Morgan Laws said. “We worked really hard all winter long and when we first started our season out I had no doubt we were going to make it far.”
“This is something that we talked about in the offseason that we were going to get a banner to hang up in the gym and to see it come true, it’s come full circle and I’m very excited,” sophomore infielder Shailen Johnson said.
“The table is set and everybody is just trying to eat and it’s an awesome feeling to see these girls just go out and nail it,” Cervantes said.
The team will head to Clinton, Mississippi for next week’s tournament.
