Illinois football closes out spring practice at bowling alley

CHAMPAIGN — Illinois football coach Lovie Smith called an audible Friday.  Instead of going to the field for the final scheduled spring practice, Smith and the Illini went to the Illini Union bowling alley instead.

“We were expecting to have our last practice and Coach Smith came to meetings and said we’re all going bowling alley,” Illinois quarterback Jeff George, Jr. said.  “It was awesome.”

“Our guys have worked hard,” Smith said.  “We’ve had a great spring and you’re right, we want to reward them.  It’s always great when you get a surprise, when you think you’re practicing and then you get to have a fun day like this as a team.”
