With first spring win in the bag, Illinois men’s golf looking up

Illini

URBANA (WCIA) — Illinois men’s golf got the monkey off its back at just the right time. The Illini hadn’t won a spring stroke play tournament until the Big Ten Championships last weekend, the last time the program went without a spring victory was 2007.

“That last round we played was as close as I’ve seen this team this year come to the mindset, the presence, the control of their space, the vibe, to the teams that we’ve had on this 10, 11 year run,” Illinois head coach Mike Small said.

“Obviously getting the ‘W’ at Big Ten was huge,” Illinois junior Michael Feagles said. “It’s just a momentum, total builder and winning is contagious so you’ll take that and run with it.”

The victory helped the program earn the No. 4 seed in the Myrtle Beach NCAA Regional that features 13 other teams. The three-day event runs May 13-15 at TPC Myrtle Beach. The Top 5 teams advance to the NCAA Championships later this month in Arkansas.
