Verdis Brown has big expectations for himself and Illini D-Line

Illini

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — Defensive lineman Verdis Brown was one of the biggest recruits of the 2018 class, choosing Illinois over schools like Ohio State and Oklahoma. After missing spring ball, he’s back and ready for a big year.

VERDIS BROWN:
“You know as a freshman coming in the spring, that was a pretty big adjustment because everyone is already in the swing of things, they already knew what was going on so just getting thrown in the fire was kind of difficult.”

BRET BEHERNS:
“Is it different now having to cut weight? The coaches say they want you be a little slimmer, how’s that going?”

VERDIS:
“It’s going good. I’ve lost about 30 pounds since I’ve been here. So it was hard at first but I just had to be dedicated and be driven to commit to it so hard work pays off.”

BRET:
“What kinds of things have you had to cut out or add to the diet or add to the exercise that you weren’t doing before?”

VERDIS:
“Well for one I stopped eating red meat. So I only eat lean meat like chicken and turkey and stuff like that. I used to be a real big pasta person so I don’t have as much pasta as I used to now.”

BRET:
“Have you noticed differences out there in practice, like I’m a little quicker or doing some things differently?”

VERDIS:
“Yeah I’ve noticed a lot cause when I first came in, we did some stuff on our own and I felt like I was pretty slow. Now I feel like I’m more nimble and able to move my hips a lot more.”

BRET:
“What’s the expectation for yourself this season?”

VERDIS:
“I just want to learn as much as I can. Learn from the older guys that have been here and get in and produce.”

BRET:
“Is that tougher or a good thing that there are so many guys? That you have a deep group at defensive line, maybe one of the deepest on the team. Does that push you harder or is it frustrating knowing there are guys ahead of you?”

VERDIS:
“I’d say that pushes me harder to compete because we all want to play, we all want to start, so that pushes everyone harder. But there’s also so many people to watch, you can look at their film, look at their mistakes and learn from it so I look at it as a positive with so many people.”
