Underwood ‘very pleased’ with Illini hoops progress

CHAMPAIGN — New Illinois men’s basketball coach Brad Underwood is taking this summer one step at a time. After all, he’s only been on the job a little more than three months. That’s why Underwood and his staff are focusing on the fundamentals, at least during June practices. The Illini are in their third week of summer workouts, they get a couple of hours per week with the coaches.

“I’ve been really pleased,” Underwood said about the time with his team. “The attention to detail has been great, the effort has been great. You know now we can really start to build week 3-8 but we won’t go too quick.

“I think it’s about the culture, about learning to work hard, understanding the pace in which we do things. But I’ve been very pleased up until this point and then we’ll stair step as we move along this summer.”

The Illini non-conference schedule should be released soon. Three games are already on the calendar: DePaul in the Gavitt Games; Wake Forest in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge; and Missouri in the Braggin’ Rights game.
