CHAMPAIGN (WCIA) — Kofi Cockburn has been committed to Illinois basketball since early January but head coach Brad Underwood hasn’t been able to talk about the 4-star, Top 50 player until now. Cockburn signed his National Letter of Intent this week, meaning he’s officially part of the program.
“He’s a great piece to our puzzle,” Underwood said. “You see a guy who has very big hands and a guy that’s unique in terms of that size, he’s extremely athletic. He can really run.
“He’s just so unique,” Underwood continued. “There’s nobody else like him in the country. You can talk about the best centers in the country and they’re good in their own ways but yet, 7-foot, 300 pounds and run and mobile like that, there’s just weren’t any of those. And that becomes intriguing, that gets exciting.”
Cockburn is the only player currently signed in the 2019 class. Bernard Kouma is also committed, he’s expected to sign. Antwan January was the first guy to pledge to play for the Illini back in November but his status is uncertain.
