Troike out for rest of the season


CHAMPAIGN (WCIA) — Illinois shortstop Ben Troike will miss the remainder of the season with a thumb injury. The junior started 43 games for the Illini this season, hitting .260 while only committing four errors.

Troike got hit in the hand over the weekend, he didn’t play in Sunday’s series finale against No. 19 Indiana. Freshman Branden Comia will take over at shortstop for Troike. He’s started 32 games this season, primarily playing second base for Michael Massey earlier in the year when the reigning Gold Glove winner was recovering from a back injury.

No. 25 Illinois returns to field for its final homestand of the season this weekend welcoming Purdue to town, starting with Friday night’s opener at 6 p.m.
