CHAMPAIGN (WCIA) — The final piece of steel on the Football Performance Center is up and with it, the signature of every Illinois football player, coach and support staffer. The team took a trip to its new $79.2 million facility after practice Monday morning as construction crews raised the last beam into place.
“Everybody realizes how important recruiting is, we’ve talked about having a better facility to showcase University of Illinois for recruiting, but what a great day for our current players,” Illinois head coach Lovie Smith said. “Now they have a chance to train in one of the top facilities in the country. This one gentleman told me, that’s working on the project, ‘The bones are in place now, now time to of course put the skin on it.'”
The Football Performance Center sits adjacent to Memorial Stadium and is on schedule to be completed about one year from now, in time for the 2019 season.
