(WCIA) — Illinois Football made their 2019 debut at Memorial Stadium for the Orange and Blue spring game–their first time in 6 months they played in front of a crowd.
The Illini split between teams Butkus and team Grange–named after the two best to ever play for the Illini.
This year, team Butkus earned a 24-10 win over team Grange.
“Positive? Not a lot of positive in my mind. We got a lot of work to do,” says head coach Lovie Smith. “There were some throws that we made that were okay, but there was a lot of stuff that we got to get cleaned up, and it ain’t just one position now.”
“Offensive side of the football, we want to be able to run the football,” says offensive coordinator Rod Smith. “We have to be able to do that. I’ll always talk about ball security. Defensively, got to take the ball away. There’s just so many things that we need to work on not just one and we’ll continue to do that. It’s a process. Spring for us, you have have to put a checkmark with what we’ve been able to do.”
Ilinois Football now has 3 practices left in their spring season.
