Spillane signs with Reds

WCIA — Former Illinois baseball standout Bren Spillane has signed with the Cincinnati Reds, according to MLB.com reporter Jim Callis. The 82nd overall pick agreed to a $600,000 contract, well below the slotted value for the third round selection of $716,000.

Spillane is coming off one of the best seasons in Illini history. The first team All-America pick was named Collegiate Baseball’s National Player of the Year and hit for the triple crown in the Big Ten, leading the league in batting average (.407), home runs (22) and RBI (57).
