Softball seniors play final game as Illini

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WCIA) — Illinois Softball’s season came to an end Sunday in a 4-2 Regional loss to Kentucky.

The Illini finish the season 39-20, making this year’s team the fourth winningest in program history. The senior class played a large role in the program’s turnaround, leading the Illini to back-to-back NCAA Tournaments for the first time since 2010.

In an emotional post-game press conference, head coach Tyra Perry and her team reflected on the seniors’ impact.

“There’s four seniors that won’t be with us anymore that have been a catalyst to our program,” Perry said. “My only regret is that I only had two years with those guys.”

“I really can’t thank them enough for the base they set for us,” junior infielder Annie Flemming said. “They’ve left a legacy that I look forward to carrying on. The base is the hardest thing to build and they got the job done.”
