Recruits flock to Champaign for Junior Day

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — Some high profile Illinois football targets, as well as some players already signed, filled Memorial Stadium this weekend.

Signees for the class of 2019 Isaiah Williams, Marquez Beason, and Shammond Cooper attended Saturday’s open practice. They were joined by 2020 targets Mookie Cooper and Reggie Love, who commited to the Illini Sunday evening.

Williams, Cooper, Cooper, and Love all attend Trinity Catholic High School in St. Louis. The signed players said they are going all-in trying to get the 2020 prospects to join them in Champaign.

“It’d be great, the chemistry already there so building chemistry it wouldn’t be that hard again,” Williams said. “So it would be easy to play with them again. It’d be a great thing because they’re like family to me.”

“It would be better playing with some of your boys that you’ve already been playing with but they’re just telling me to make the right decision, and just know that family is always here,” Mookie Cooper said.

“Getting back to the city, getting back to the town it’s a good feeling being back to somewhere I’m know I’m gonna be this summer,” Shammond Cooper said. “I’m relaxing but everywhere I go I’m learning, everywhere I go I’m trying to pick up stuff I can put into my own game. Just trying to watch the linebackers and see what I can put into my own game.”

Illinois also got their first commit of the 2020 class on Sunday. 3-star offensive lineman Marcus Harper from Chicago Simeon pledged his verbal commit to the Illini on twitter.
