O’Brien stepping in to fill libero role for Illini

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — Only one player graduated from the Illinois volleyball team last season, libero Brandi Donnelly. Now sophomore Morgan O’Brien is stepping into that role, and using what she learned from Donnelly.

“Yeah, I feel like I have big shoes to fill obviously Brandi was really good but she also taught me a lot and I learned so much from her,” O’Brien said. “Now Alfie is here and he’s a really good mentor for me and he’s teaching me a lot everyday.”

“She played our spring ball and then of course like you mentioned when Brandi went out last year it was kind of like ‘Well, who’s our next best passer?’ and Morgan was that and she did a nice job,” head coach Chris Tamas added. “Of course when Brandi came back we were going to put her back in but she had that experience and that led to Mo having a good spring and then like I said summer with the national team and now she’s doing a great job here the first couple weeks.”

Illinois opens their season on Friday against UNCW at the  Colorado State tournament.
