CHAMPAIGN (WCIA) — Lanphier has ended Central’s season the last two years in the sectional semifinals. They meet again on Tuesday, again in the sectional semifinals. Last year, Central promised to never lose to Lanphier again, the Lions are holding to that.
Lanphier won 68-61 in 2016. Then again 82-59 in 2017.
After the loss in 2017, Tim Finke told reporters “That’s never going to happen again while I’m at Central. I guarantee that. I’m never losing to them again.”
Lanphier remembers those words.
“After we beat Champaign last year they went on record and said that they would never lose to Lanphier again. The time is here and the time has come and our kids are aware of that,” Lanphier head coach Blake Turner said after the Lions won their regional Friday night.
“Yeah, I definitely remember that,” Finke said. “We’re going to take it as another game just like we have all year. We’ve played in a lot of big games this year so if we go out there and do what we can do I think we’ll feel pretty good about what we can have done.”
“Are you standing by your statement from last year?” we asked.
“I’m going to have to back it up,” Finke responded. “Who would I be to not?”
It’s a 7:00 p.m. tip-off from Eisenhower on Tuesday night.
