CHAMPAIGN (WCIA) — The Illinois soccer team, and the track and field program are both getting new stadiums in the coming years.
Demirjian Park will be constructed in the same location as the current facility, with two soccer fields added to the east side. Then the current stadium will be renovated and be only occupied by the track and field team.
“When you look at our facilities, this is more than a home for us, OK? We have no home. I’ve been out there for 12 years standing in the middle of the field and I don’t think you could understand the kind of gratitude that I have for our program towards you for your gift,” track and field coach Mike Turk said. “I think being able to provide basic human needs of love and shelter and care goes a long way to creating a championship culture.”
“We have a quality that we celebrate in our program called a game changer. Someone who, coming on the field or coming off the bench, or something they do off the field, makes a difference for the program and makes a difference for their team. Demirjian Park is a game changer,” soccer coach Janet Rayfield explained.
The new facilities will open in 2019.
