CHAMPAIGN (WCIA) — Lovie Smith is keeping it in the family. The Illinois football head coach named his son Miles the team’s 10th assistant on Monday. It comes after Donnie Abraham left the program for personal reasons two weeks ago.
“Whenever you get a chance to work with your son it’s a good thing,” Lovie Smith said. “Like it’s a great thing when you get a chance for me, there’s so many personal relationships I do have. Coach Andrew Hayes-Stoker started as a young coach coming up with me. Coach Hardy Nickerson, I started with him. We like to promote within as much as anything.”
Miles Smith will work with with the cornerbacks and nickelbacks. He started the season as a graduate assistant but will now become a full-time interim assistant coach until the end of January. A national search for Abraham’s replacement will start at the end of the 2018 season.
