Lovie says Bush has “quickly kind of taken control of the team”

Illini

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — Coming into training camp Lovie Smith admitted there was a full on quarterback competition. Two weeks later there seems to be a clear cut leader for the job.

AJ Bush has been far and away the most impressive of the quarterbacks, both on the field and off. He has now separated himself as the leader for the start on September 1st against Kent State.

“Leadership, starting off with that. Yeah he has good size, he can throw it, can run it but it’s a little bit more than that at the quarterback position,” Smith said. “AJ has come in and quickly kind of taken control of the team a little bit, believe in it. You hear him, confident player as much as anything.”

Illinois returns to practice on Monday morning at 9 a.m.
