CHAMPAIGN (WCIA) — Illinois Women’s Basketball is less than three weeks away from their season opener.
It’s the first season under head coach Nancy Fahey. She said her team has improved on defense but is still working to understand her offensive system.
Last year the Illini averaged 62.4 points The team said it’s been a challenge adjusting to Fahey’s system but they are excited about what it brings.
“I think the hardest thing is that I’ve been in a system for awhile where the players were teaching the players a little bit,” Fahey said. “Now, in some respects, I have 15 freshmen. We have to take a little bit more time explaining stuff.”
“It’s going to work really well with our personnel,” junior forward Alex Wittinger said. “We’re starting to see the open looks now without thinking. The first part is obviously hard because you’re thinking through it. You’re, ‘OK, I got to do this. I got to do this,’ but now it’s starting to get to the point where we aren’t because we’re comfortable with it.”
The Illini open their season at home against Wayne Fort Nov. 10.
