MADISON, Wis. (WCIA) — The Illinois women’s golf team came up one spot short of making its first trip to the NCAA Championships on Wednesday, finishing 7th at the NCAA Madison Regional. The Illini finished the three day tournament with a total score of 866 (+2), the best regional finish in program history.
“We put ourselves in position and we gave it everything we had and we’ll be back next year,” Illinois head coach Renee Sloan said. “We just didn’t have that great round, or a really good round. To be honest, you know, as far as our golf overall as a team is concerned, it was so-so.”
It was an emotional finish to a monumental season for the Illini that included three tournament wins and a Top 25 ranking.
“I think right now it’s just kind of sad that it’s over,” Illinois senior Dana Gattone said. “This group has gotten so close this year. We talked all year about how we’re not just but we’re best friends. So we’re sad we didn’t make it but we really, really gave it our all and that’s not what the tears are for. They’re just happy tears that we all experienced what we did this year.”
“Definitely was special,” Illinois senior Grace Park said. “My teammates, they’re my sisters. I could not be more grateful to have this season with them.”
Park led the charge for the orange and blue, carding a three-under round in the final day of the tournament to finish tied for 11th individually. Tristyn Nowlin and Jan Prapassarangkul tied for 30th at +2.
