CHAMPAIGN (WCIA) — Five Illini scored in double-figures, led by a team high 17 from Mark Alstork and Aaron Jordan, as Illinois cruised to a 102-55 win against Southern in the season opener Friday night. It’s the first victory with the Illini for new head coach Brad Underwood.
“I’ll be honest, I was nervous,” Underwood said. “I was emotional I guess from the standpoint that I’m living out my dream. And to be able to do that and 14,000 show up tonight, it was pretty special and I thought our guys played great and played hard so all in all, it was a good night.”
Jordan scored 23 points last season for the Illini, the junior guard from Plainfield had 17 Friday night. Kipper Nichols and Leron Black had 14 points a piece, to go along with 12 from Centennial grad Michael Finke.
The Illini (1-0) are back on the court Sunday afternoon hosting Tennessee-Martin at 5 p.m.
