WCIA — Illinois basketball adds a player to the 2018 class in the biggest position of need. Anthony Higgs verbally committed to play for the Illini on Tuesday afternoon. The 6-foot-8, 200 pound forward is from Baltimore, Maryland and picked to come to Champaign over offers from Louisville, Virginia Tech, Xavier, Cincinnati and Colorado, among others.
“After much consideration with my family and the people closest to me, I have decided to continue my career in attending the University of Illinois,” Higgs said in his announcement on Twitter. “It is an extreme honor to play under Coach Underwood and the rest of the Illini family on the Big 10. I want to thank everyone that recruited me its has truly been a blessing.”
Higgs won back-to-back state championships at Perry Hall high school and was originally committed to Ole Miss but reopened his recruitment after the Rebels made a coaching change. Higgs is the third frontcourt player for the Illini in the 2018 class, joining Samba Kane and Giorgi Bezhanishvili. There are four guards in the seven-man class: Ayo Dosunmu, Alan Griffin, Tevian Jones and Andres Feliz. Two open scholarships still remain for this upcoming season.
