CHAMPAIGN (WCIA) — Trent Frazier wasn’t expecting to be Illinois basketball’s leader as a freshman but that’s exactly where the Wellington, Florida native finds himself with just five games left in the regular season.
Frazier is second on the team in scoring, averaging 12.3 points per game, trailing only junior forward Leron Black who is two points higher. Frazier’s scoring has been a pleasant surprise for the 12-14 Illini but it’s his voice that’s most needed for a team lacking leadership.
“I just need to become more of a leader and step up and be more vocal on and off the court,” Frazier said. “I mean, I’m not used to being that guy. I’m a freshman so I feel like that’s not my role but obviously being one of those guys that always have the ball in their hand making plays for myself or my teammates, I feel like I need to become more of a leader and be more vocal with my guys.”
Frazier and the Illini are back on the court Wednesday night at Indiana for a 7:30 p.m. CT game in Bloomington.
