OXFORD, Miss. (WCIA) — The Illinois baseball team is in Mississippi making their first appearance in the NCAA tournament in four years. Many fans from Illini Nation made the trip to watch the orange and blue.
There’s a lot of orange in Oxford as both Illinois and Clemson sport the color and both schools traveled well all things considered. It’s about a seven hour drive from Champaign, it’s actually a little less to Clemson, South Carolina from Oxford.
There’s not many people who traveled farther than Steve Korte. He left Melbourne, Florida at 1:00 a.m. eastern time Friday morning. It took him less than twelve hours to get to Oxford but the brother of Illini catcher Jeff Korte says he wouldn’t have missed it and that’s the same thing all the Illini fans said on Friday.
“It’s amazing. It’s so cool to watch them play in a facility like this and play in the Regional tournament,” Korte said. “I’m so proud of them for all the hard work they’ve put in thru the season to get here right now.”
“We’ve been following them all year,” Matt Baker said. “Been following Nathan Lavendar since his high school career and just come down, eight hours to watch them play. Hope they do well.”
