OXFORD, Miss. (WCIA) — The Illini put up one run in each of the first three innings, but Clemson put up four over those frames and went on to take down Illinois 8-4 on Friday.
The Illini had the bases loaded with only one out in the 6th but Michael Massey grounded into a double play to end the inning.
“It was definitely a big turning point,” Comia said. “We also had many other times to score but that was a big time.”
“I mean that was huge,” Grant Van Scoy said. “We had a good opportunity to tie the game up or take the lead and that didn’t happen. That fired them up and I think they got a couple of runs in that top half.”
“It is a disappointment but we’ve bounced back from different things all year,” head coach Dan Hartleb said. “We started out 1-5 in the conference and found a way to get ourselves back in the mix so this group will bounce back, we’ll be ready to go tomorrow.”
Comia went 2-4 with an RBI in the game. Cam McDonald and Van Scoy also went 2-4 on the day.
Illinois will now play in an elimination game at noon on Saturday against Jacksonville State.
