URBANA (WCIA) — Taylor Edwards says she ‘had a feeling’ the Illinois softball team would hear its name on Selection Sunday. Turns out her instinct was right. The Illini weren’t even on the bubble, as the third team picked to the Lexington Regional, with No 14 overall seed Kentucky serving as host.
“We had some people doing calculations and they were saying yes but then again some other predictions from random websites were saying that we were out,” Edwards said. “So it was honestly just an ‘I don’t know’ feeling, which kind of made our name popping up on the screen a lot better.”
“Oh absolutely, that’s an honest answer,” Illinois head coach Tyra Perry said when asked if she thought the Illini would be in. “We kind of did the math too. Again with the NCAA you never know what’s going to happen but there weren’t a lot of upsets, we were in the 40s (RPI). My first year here I believe we were 46 and this time we were 44 and moved up to 41.”
Illinois faces Virginia Tech in the first round of the NCAA tournament on Friday morning at 11 a.m. CT. The winner advances to play either host Kentucky or Toledo on Saturday in the double elimination format.
