CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — Illinois and Rutgers have played some classic games on the court since the Scarlet Knights joined the Big Ten, and Saturday was no different.
It went to overtime, and in the end Illinois held home court with a 99-94 win.
The Illini improve to 9-15 overall and 5-8 in the Big Ten.
Freshman Giorgi Bezhanishvili scored 35 points. That breaks the Illinois freshman single game record, former held by Deon Thomas.
“I actually didn’t know about the record, it just happened. I was just feeling good, playing basketball and it just happened,” Bezhanishvili said. “I think it’s great, it’s a great feeling but that’s not what it’s about. Just trying to get focused on the next game, Ohio State, and just keep growing. That’s what I’m focused on.”
“Congratulations to him. Breaking almost a 30 year old record, that’s pretty special.” Brad Underwood said. “For a young man that didn’t have a lot of recruitment, I think he’s proven he’s a pretty good player.”
Illinois travels to Ohio State on Thursday night.
