George, Jr.: “I’m excited and ready to go.”

CHAMPAIGN (WCIA) — Illinois sophomore quarterback Jeff George, Jr. is embracing every chance he gets, especially one to start. That’s how the Indianapolis native is approaching Saturday’s game at Iowa after head coach Lovie Smith announced Chayce Crouch was being demoted after Illinois’ loss to Nebraska.

“I’ve felt great, I’ve felt ready to go,” George, Jr. said. “I’ve been preparing every week as if I was the guy so nothing has really changed all that much as far as my mental preparation but I’m excited and ready to go.”

True freshman Cam Thomas will be George, Jr.’s backup against the Hawkeyes. The Chicago Heights product hasn’t played this season and is coming off a one-game suspension for a violation of team rules. The Illini (2-2, 0-1 B1G) are 18-point underdogs.
