CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — 30 years ago the Flyin’ Illini put Illinois basketball in the national spotlight with a trip to the Final Four.
This weekend the players and coaches were back on campus to celebrate the historic season and reunite with some of their teammates they haven’t seen in years.
“It means everything because we rarely get together like this anymore,” Kendall Gill said. “A lot of us live in different parts of the country. We still all stay in touch via text or phone calls but there’s nothing like getting together like we used to every day.”
“My last game I played at the Assembly Hall was a sellout. We come back 30 years later and it’s a sellout,” Kenny Battle said. “We didn’t get the result we wanted today but the young guys played well, hard fought battle but it’s going to get better.”
14 of the 15 players on that team were from the state of Illinois.
