Diab claims 4th B1G rings title, Carter grabs 1st on high bar

Illini

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — Illinois was unable to defend their Big Ten championships, but they did claim two individual titles last weekend.

Alex Diab won the still rings for the fourth year in a row. He’s the third gymnast in Big Ten history to win four straight titles in an event.

Freshman Hamish Carter won on the high bar. Carter is the second Illini in a row to win the event, Chandler Eggleston won in 2018.

“It was a bit of a sore one, we won last year, we were looking to defend the title. But to qualify for high bar, and really happy I could come away with the gold, and it was for my team,” Carter said. “Being part of this team gives me something extra to strive for.”

“A kind of sour and heartbreaking weekend, we came back on the individual event finals, had some great perfromances which is exciting. We have the guys try to gain some perspective after a loss like that, but in the interim, we don’t have too much time to sit back and think about anything, because we got to get charged up for NCAA championships,” head coach Justin Spring said.

Illinois hosts those NCAA championships at the State Farm Center starting on April 19th.
