Comfortable in Kentucky: Familiar surroundings for Illinois softball

Illini

URBANA (WCIA) — The Illinois softball team knows all about Lexington, they could probably be a tour guide at John Cropp Stadium. The seniors should feel right at home playing there in this weekend’s NCAA tournament, making their third postseason appearance at the University of Kentucky in the last four years.

“I mean it’s super important to know the field you’re playing on and be comfortable there and we are that,” Illinois senior outfielder Kiana Sherlund said. “We faced Kentucky earlier this year and we feel really good about being where we are.”

Illinois opens up the NCAA tournament on Friday morning at 11 a.m. CT against Virginia Tech. The winner will face the host Wildcats or Toledo in the second game on Saturday. The Illini beat the overall No. 14 host school once earlier this season.

“You know I totally think it gives us an advantage compared to the other teams,” Illinois senior outfielder Carly Thomas said. “As well as we get to go in with the confidence that we beat Kentucky already.”
