Chopra leading Illini after one round at B1G Championships

Illini

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — Illinois sits in a tie for 2nd after the first round of the Big Ten Championships. Varun Chopra and Michael Feagles tied for the low Illini score on the day.

Chopra has found a groove as of late, leading the Illini in scoring the last two tournament. He played in three tournaments last year as a freshman, but played in each as an individual and not part of the Illinois scoring.

He’s dropped his 18-hole average from 75.25 to 72.28 this season, 71.17 this spring.

“Really nice that I’ve been able to play well coming into this time of the year. We always walk about as a team this is the postseason, the championship season, so this is really when we want to get our games good,” Chopra said. “It’s just kind of been building up so it’s been great.”

“Varun is continuing to grow, he’s learning about his golf swing, he’s learning about how he handles his emotions in certain situations,” head coach Mike Small said. “Yeah, he’s had two great weeks and we’re excited for that. That’s a great jumpstart for our team. The guys are excited about that. He’s given us an infusion of low scores these last two weeks.”
