CHAMPAIGN (WCIA) — Illinois sophomore safety Bennett Williams has been kicked off the team for a violation of team rules, the news has been confirmed by a school spokesperson. Williams returned to the field against Penn State after serving a three-game suspension but only played in the first half after getting hurt. He did not travel to Rutgers over the weekend.
Williams had a standout freshman season for the Illini and was named an ESPN.com Freshman All-American. He played in 11 games with seven starts at safety, recording 64 tackles and three interceptions to lead the team. Williams was the first true freshman safety to start the season opener since at least 1980.
