SJO looks to keep streak intact

ST. JOSEPH (WCIA) — The St. Joseph-Ogden football team has been to the postseason 26 straight years, the longest active streak in Central Illinois. If the Spartans plan to make it back in 2017, they’ll have to rely on a small senior class to get them there. Only 10 seniors are out for the team.

“We have to be more mentally tough and we have to compete with ourselves,” SJO head coach Shawn Skinner said. “It wasn’t so much about what the opposing teams did or didn’t do, it was what we did and didn’t do.”

“A lot of games were close games, most of the game we beat ourselves up,” SJO senior center Elijah Place said. “So we just got to learn to not make so many mistakes and just play with our hearts out and just play our hardest.”

The Spartans open the season at home on Aug. 25 against St. Thomas More.
