DANVILLE, Ill. (WCIA) — Monday was the officially start date for girls basketball teams around the state, and one of four hoping to repeat as state champs is the Schlarman Hilltoppers.
Schlarman returns every single one of their players from last years 33-1 state championship team, lead by Notre Dame commit Anaya Peoples. Now that they’ve tasted a title, they’re hungry for another one.
“It prepared us, that’s one thing. We get mentally focused, emotionally,” senior Janiah Newell said. “We know what to expect from the referees, the other team, even from ourselves… even from coach too.”
“I feel like we still got work to do, we still got to get better, everybody got to get better even though we got everybody coming back,” Destiny Dye added. “I’m excited though.”
“It’s a lot of pressure to be expected to do the same thing back to back and just being able to improve the same way and play the same way that we did last year,” Sydney Gouard said.
Schlarman opens their season November 16th against 3A Metamora.
