Offense fueling STM soccer into sectional final

DECATUR (WCIA) — Scoring hasn’t been a problem for the St. Thomas More girls’ soccer team the last few weeks. The Sabers have outscored opponents 13-1 in the postseason thus far entering Friday’s Class 1A Decatur LSA sectional title match against Carlinville.

“Early goals are huge,” St. Thomas More senior Izzy Schmitt said. “We talk about it every day. It’s the early goals and then its the late goals at the end of the half that really show the other team that in the beginning we’re working really hard and at the end of the half we’re still pushing.”

“We’ve got a great group of seniors and they know that we didn’t play our absolute best,” St. Thomas More head coach James Johnson said about Tuesday night’s 3-0 victory over Hillsboro. “We’re going to need it on Friday to win a sectional.”

St. Thomas More and Carlinville are both top seeds in the sectional, they meet Friday at 4 p.m. at Decatur LSA. The winner advances to next Tuesday’s super-sectional hosted by Columbia.
