MATTOON (WCIA) — The Mattoon football team is moving on to the second round of the playoffs for the first time since 2007 after beating Mascoutah over the weekend. The Green Wave avenged an earlier loss to the Indians by beating them 28-24 on Saturday.
“I don’t worry too much about monkeys on my back,” Mattoon head coach Troy Johnson said. “I don’t promise wins and losses. What I promise is that our kids will play hard and they’ll give you the best they have. For this group, they’ve won some games and it’s really been nice.”
The Green Wave (7-3) advance to play at top seed Highland (10-0) on Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m. Mattoon’s seven wins this season ties a five-year high.
“We’re pretty confident,” Mattoon linebacker Londyn Fultz said. “A lot of people don’t have a lot of faith in us but they don’t know what we’re doing out here every day and they don’t know the kind of work we put in every day and we just want to prove them wrong.”
