CHAMPAIGN — Interested in becoming the next Illinois men’s basketball coach? The job is vacant and an opening to replace John Groce was posted online Monday morning, just 48 hours after athletic director Josh Whitman fired the fifth-year coach.
Now the challenge for Whitman is finding his replacement. According to the job listing on UI’s Human Resources website, applicants need at least five years Division I coaching experience. A bachelor’s degree is also a requirement, a masters is encouraged. The number one responsibility of the job is to identify, evaluate and recruit student-athletes to the University of Illinois. Whitman says he wants the search to move quickly.
“You never sacrifice quality for speed,” Whitman said. “Certainly in a perfect world you’d like to do both but I’m not a big fan, and you’ve seen it in the searches I’ve done, I don’t like to leave things open for very long. The less time we can have it vacant the better but you’re not going to move fast and give up the opportunity to get the right person so you have to try and find that balance.”
The job posting runs from March 13 through the 20th.
